The Central New York
Regional Transportation Authority was created in 1970. CNY Centro began
operation in 1972. The purposes of the Authority are set forth as follows: The
strengthening and improvement of transportation for all residents of the Central
part of the State is a matter of vital importance....the provision of adequate
and efficient transportation and related services....requires coordinated
operation of mass transit services by a public transportation authority.
Operating subsidiary corporations include:
- CNY Centro, Inc.
- Centro of Cayuga
- Centro of Oswego
- Centro of Oneida
- Call-A-Bus Paratransit Services
- Centro Parking
- ITC, Inc.
The transportation district
of CNYRTA consists of the counties of Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Oswego. Three
other counties - Cortland, Jefferson, and Madison - may join the district by a
vote of the respective county legislature.
Approximately 35% of the
Authority's operating costs are supported by revenues received from passengers.
Federal, State and local operating assistance make up the difference.
